Corporate League Rules

The Corporate League is played according to the normal FIH rules, with a couple of exceptions. Some of the rules have been adapted to ensure safety on the pitch, to cater for the effects of playing 7 a side and across pitch and finally to balance the skills difference so the game becomes more enjoyable for beginners and experienced players.

The following rules apply to the Corporate League matches (update season 2011/2012):

General Rules

  • The Matches will be played across the pitch, as marked out by the blue lines.
  • Matches are 2 X 25 minutes with a 5 minute break for half time.
  • The 2 captains of each team are responsible for their team’s behaviour on the field.
  • Shin Pads are mandatory for each player on the field.
  • All results must be communicated to Ross by the umpires on a Tuesday following a corporate game. Only Ross will update results.
  • Each team must play with 7 players, including a padded goalkeeper, a minimum of 2 of the following ; a Lady, a Junior (-18) or a beginner (started this season to play hockey).
    • If a team does not have a keeper, they forfeit the match.
    • If a team cannot provide a minimum of 2 of the following (Lady/ Beginner/ Junior), the team must play without that number of players they cannot provide. For example, if they only have one lady playing, they must complete the match with only 6 players on the pitch.
    • A team must always have the minimum number of 2 players from the following combination on the pitch at any one time: Ladies, Junior, and Beginners
  • Each Match is umpired by at least one umpire (preferably two) supplied by the assigned team in the schedule. Umpires teams are awarded 1 bonus point for umpiring a game.  If a team cannot umpire, but finds a replacement, the team who umpires is awarded the bonus point
  • All matches must be cancelled no later than midday (12:00) on the Friday before a match. If a team does not cancel before that time, the match is then forfeit in favour of the opposition.

On the field of play

  • Stick Tackles, Physical tackles on players are not allowed in FIH rules, nor are they allowed in the corporate league.
  • Any player, who commits a professional foul, may be given a 5 minute yellow card and must be removed from the pitch.
  • A player may also be carded for persistent back chat to the umpire or creating a hostile playing environment.
  • Any player previously carded, may be red carded if behaviour and tackles continue after returning from a 5 minute suspension.
  • Balls may be lifted to knee height.
  • Hitting is allowed, but players may not hit the ball directly at a player, nor when being challenged for the ball.
  • When in the D, a player may hit a ball, but only if not within 3 m of any player and only 1 on 1 with the keeper. The ball hit, MUST ALWAYS hit the backboard.
  • A Ball may be lifted to score a goal via a flick, but again no player must be within 3 m and only 1 on 1 with the keeper.
  • If a foul is awarded inside the D, a flick, push, hit may be awarded, from the center and top of the circle. Only the Goal Keeper may defend and must stay on the line until the ball is struck.
  • Flicks, pushes are allowed, as is hitting, but hitting must hit the backboard and not be directed at players.
  • Penalty flicks will be awarded in the case of a goal line foul or professional foul in the D.
  • When having a free hit or long corner, the ball must travel 3 meters (inclusive of self-pass) before entering the D.

Advice to the umpires
  • The priority is Safety, so decisions should be led by this to protect players.
  • Beginners should be shown leniency in decisions, that would not affect open play (accidently foot with no player around etc)
  • Be clear in the decisions and if any arguments arise, the captains must control their players and any player in breach of fair play rules or being aggressive to team/ opposition or umpire will be reviewed by CHL committee for possible sanctions

Advice to the players

  • The level of play and experience in the league is mixed, please keep that in mind at all times
  • Accept the decisions by the umpires; they are there to help with the flow of the game and safety of you all.
  • Keep it safe, fun and fair.
